In 2018, the Houston Roughnecks (then Baltimore) traveled to Dakota for the inaugural AXC Conference Championship game. Dakota won 26-3 on way to the leagues 1st XFL Title. Since, the 2 teams have had very different paths to reach this eventual rematch, 21 seasons later.
Dakota has made the playoffs every season since, making their 15th Conference Championship game this season where they are 9-5 Alltime including winning the past 2 years.
The Houston francise started in Baltimore from 2018-2021 with that 2018 run being their only playoff appearance before the francise was moved to Birmingham in 2022 under new ownership and became the Thunderbolts. They played in Birmingham from 2022-2025 making the playoffs just the 1st season (2022). In 2026, the team was once again sold and moved to Houston and became the Roughnecks. From 2026-2039, they have made 6 postseason appearances but this is their 1st trip back to the Conference Championship game since 2018.
