In 2018, the Houston Roughnecks (then Baltimore) traveled to Dakota for the inaugural AXC Conference Championship game. Dakota won 26-3 on way to the leagues 1st XFL Title. Since, the 2 teams have had very different paths to reach this eventual rematch, 21 seasons later.

Dakota has made the playoffs every season since, making their 15th Conference Championship game this season where they are 9-5 Alltime including winning the past 2 years.

The Houston francise started in Baltimore from 2018-2021 with that 2018 run being their only playoff appearance before the francise was moved to Birmingham in 2022 under new ownership and became the Thunderbolts. They played in Birmingham from 2022-2025 making the playoffs just the 1st season (2022). In 2026, the team was once again sold and moved to Houston and became the Roughnecks. From 2026-2039, they have made 6 postseason appearances but this is their 1st trip back to the Conference Championship game since 2018.

The 2 francises have met 4 times in the postseason (2018, 2022, 2032, 2036) where Dakota is 4-0 winning 2 games at home and 2 on the road. An interesting footnote is Dakota has beaten the Houston francise in all 3 cities they have played in the postseason.

This game was close in the 1st half as Houston took a 6-3 lead in the 2nd quarter after QB Robert Alvarez threw an interception which set up the go ahead fieldgoal. Alvarez would quickly bounce back, marching 75 yards on 11 plays and tossing a TD pass to WR Carlton Smith with 2:54 left in the 1st half. Dakota would go for 2 and failed making the score 9-6 at halftime.

The 2nd half was all Dakota as their defense held Houston to just 12 yards in the half, no 1st downs and forcing 6 punts. Alvarez hit WR Richard Yang for a 27 yard TD early in the 3rd quarter and added a 2 pt conversion to make the score 17-6 which was enough to win the game. Dakota would add 2 fieldgoals making the final score 23-6.

This game went back and forth in the 1st half as Vegas took an early 8-0 lead on a safety plus a 23 yard TD pass from QB James Henry to WR Scott Clark and failed 2 point conversion. Philadelphia would answer in the 1st quarter with a QB Lawrence Lewis 6 yard TD pass to WR William Stokes making the score 8-6 after another failed 2 point conversion. Vegas would add to their lead with a fieldgoal making the score 11-6 before Philadelphia answered with a Lewis 24 yard TD pass to RB Lorenzo Sanders plus a successful 2 point conversion making the score 14-11 Philadelphia. Vegas would end the 1st half with a Henry 8 yard TD pass to WR Clifford Mays followed by a 2 pt conversion taking a 19-14 lead into halftime.

The 2nd half started with Vegas hitting 2 fieldgoals while Philadelphia hit 1 fieldgoal making the score 29-17 Vegas after 3 quarters. The 4th quarter was quiet until the 2:54 mark when Vegas scored a TD on a WR Scott Clark 1 run yard making the score 36-17 which essentially ended the game. Clark would rush for 181 yards on 24 carries.

Philadelphia still had some fight left as WR Claurence Goins took the ensuing KO 99 yards for a TD plus a 2 point conversion making the score 36-25. Then they recovered their onside kick and Lewis would throw a 26 yard TD pass to WR Roy Kirkpatrick with 1:47 left in the game but the 2 point conversion failed making the score 36-31. Unbelievably, Philadelphia again recovered their onside kick and Lewis hit WR Francis Proctor for 30 yards down at the Vegas 18 yard line with 1:38 left in the game but Proctor fumbled and Vegas recovered which ended Philadelphia's magical comeback attempt.
