I believe you are right and the midweek sim is when you can go over the limit during the season
As long as your roster doesn't exceed 53, you can sign free agents anytime BUT if you sign them during the game sim, you will need to make corresponding cuts before the game runs or the system will do it for you as we just saw.
Signing players during midweek sim allows you time to see who was actually signed, then you make your cuts before the game sim runs.
Same thing with trades btw, have to make sure to stay within 53 players heading into the game sim.
I usually try to keep my signings to the midweek sims so I have 1 sim to decide whom to cut.

You're welcome, looks like you got them all back. Glad this isn't like yahoo fantasy football...there you aren't allowed to put in a claim for a player you just dropped until everyone else gets a chance.
