2049 1st round draft review

Multiple picks
Philadelphia ×2
Seattle ×2
Atlanta ×2
Texas ×2
Los Angeles ×2
Washington ×2
Vancouver ×2

No picks
Indiana
Buffalo
New England
Daytona
Vegas
Montana
Carolina

2049 1.1
Philadelphia
RB Jarrod Ross 30/80
Vol 26
5' 8" 223 lbs
Southern California

Philadelphia starts the draft selecting the RB from the National Championship Southern California Trojans. Ross is built like a fire hydrant at 5' 8", 223 lbs and showed the ability to handle being the primary back with solid pass catching ability.

Grade A

2049 1.2
Saint Paul
MLB Nathan Cartcart 32/82
Vol 42
6' 0" 241 lbs
Colorodo

Saint Paul selects this year's Butkus award winner for best LB in Cartcart. He has elite smarts and excels in both run & pass defense. His speed is considered average for the XFL but he is a leader on defense along with being a playmaker.

Grade A

2049 1.3
Seattle
DT Nicolas Bartlow 50/89
Vol 4
6' 2" 310 lbs
Winston Salem

Seattle had the 31st ranked run defense last season so they take the top DT in the draft. Bartlow is a rare combination of size, strength, speed, quickness and smarts all built to play DT in the XFL for the next 10 years.

Grade A

2049 1.4
Atlanta
CB Jack Morrison 32/79
Vol 14
5' 10" 176 lbs
Eastern Kentucky

The 8× defending Champs drafted thus undersized defensive back out of a smaller college as they look to retool an aging roster. He has elite speed and solid cover skills but scouts are concerned about his size holding up in the XFL. He will need to bulk up from his 176 pounds which could impact his speed. With that being said, nobody can second guess Atlanta after nearly a decade of dominance in the draft.

Grade A

2049 1.5
Miami
SLB Ken Pace 42/82
Vol 4
6' 2" 246 lbs
Towson State

Although Cartcart was the Butkus award winner, many scouts loved Pace as the best LB entering the draft. He has a similar skill set as Cartcart but is faster. Should be the captain of Miami's defense for the next 5-10 seasons.

Grade A+

2049 1.6
Seattle
DT Jeffrey Davis 49/87
Vol 38
6' 2" 305 lbs
UCLA

Seattle uses their 2nd pick of the 1st round for another dominating DT as it appears they play on stuffing the run next season. The combination of Davis & Bartlow in the middle of the defensive line should force opponents to become one dimensional on offense.

Grade A

2049 1.7
Memphis
RB Reynaldo Millet 31/85
Vol 80
5' 10" 223 lbs
Notre Dame

Memphis is known for drafting offensive skill position players early in the draft and this year is no exception as they select Millet who was a RB in college. He can play in the backfield or line up as a WR on the outside.

Grade A

2049 1.8
Vancouver
CB Brandon Noble 31/79
Vol 22
6' 0" 203 lbs
Auburn

Vancouver won the AXC Conference Championship last season and they select a defensive back with the 8th overall pick. Noble is a hard hitting DB who can play CB or S in the XFL. He has above average speed and elite M2M cover skills which will play in the XFL.

Grade A+

2049 1.9
Atlanta
CB Aaron Hodge 30/80
Vol 56
5' 10" 209 lbs
Notre Dame

Atlanta has won 8 straight Titles yet still have 2 picks in the top 10 of the 1st round. That about sums up their dominance in the last decade. The additions of Hodge & Morrison helps completely rebuild their secondary very quickly as they look for their 9th straight Title.

Grade A

2049 1.10
Washington
DT Peter Capone 48/83
Vol 0
6' 2" 295 lbs
Oklahoma State

Washington had the 11th ranked defense last season and 7th ranked run defense but they improved a strength with the addition of a DT who ranked 3rd best in the draft and goes 10th overall.

Grade A

2049 1.11
Tampa Bay
LDE William Bridwell 48/85
Vol 52
6' 3" 283 lbs
Michigan

The first true edge rusher goes at #11 to Tampa Bay. They ranked 6th in sacks last season but 23rd in pass defense as they look to improve their pass rush. Bridwell has elite speed & strength at DE and can not only rush the passer but seal the edge against the run. He could become an elite pass rusher as he should get double digit sacks for the next 5-10 seasons.

Grade A+

2049 1.12
Texas
LT Sammie Pittman 25/85
Vol 96
6' 4" 324 lbs
Michigan State

Texas selects Pittman as the first offensive lineman taken in the draft. It's comes as a surprise as Dellinger was considered the consensus best O-Lineman in the draft. Pittman should start in the XFL for a long time but Dellinger is faster and stronger than Pittman. Both are 6' 4" but Pittman does have 25 pound on Dellinger which may have factored into the decision.

Grade A-

2049 1.13
Dakota
WR Joshua Davis 36/90
Vol 80
6' 0" 202 lbs
Oklahoma

Dakota had Davis at the top of their board but never though he would be there at pick 13. He is the most complete WR in the draft but off the field concerns after he was suspended in college dropped his draft stock. If he can put those off the field issues behind him and he lives up to his potential then he could become special but it could become a train wreck if things go off the rails.

Grade A

2049 1.14
Oakland
TE Robert Fort 37/82
Vol 8
6' 3" 261 lbs
UCLA

Oakland selects the first TE in the draft with the selection of Fort. He has elite size, blocking & pass catching abilities with average speed at TE. If he loses some weight and improves his speed he could become special in the XFL.

Grade A

2049 1.15
Vancouver
TE George Everett 32/74
Vol 44
6' 3" 251 lbs
Texas

Vancouver selects the second straight TE as Everett out of Texas is taken. He has a complete set of Blocking and pass catching skills along with average speed at TE. Like Fort, he should lose some weight and get faster to unlock his full potential.

Re: 2049 1st round draft review

2049 1.16
Los Angeles
CB Ronald Miller 39/83
Vol 64
6' 0" 183 lbs
Florida State

Los Angeles lands this undersized DB out of Florida State who boasts elite speed. Scouts love his potential and if he can live up to the hype he could be special. Even if he fails to live up to his potential, his speed will lead him to make plays on defense.

Grade A+

2049 1.17
Philadelphia
WR Bob Ostrander 39/78
Vol 80
6' 0" 203 lbs
Kansas

Philadelphia has made the postseason the last 11 seasons and had the 9th ranked defense last season. This draft they used the #1 overall pick on a RB and used the 17th overall pick to select a WR with elite speed in hopes of improving last seasons 17th ranked offense into a top 10 unit like the defense. Ostrander is one of those picks that could prove to be solid gold when it's all said and done.

Grade A+

2049 1.18
Houston
LG Daniel Dellinger 35/94
Vol 76
6' 4" 299 lbs
Stanford

This Stanford Cardinal standout came to the draft with expectations of being a top 10 pick. He had to sit in the green room and watch another O-lineman go ahead of him in the draft as he fell to the 18th pick. Dellinger may well use that as fuel to become a stalwart on Houston's offensive line for the next decade. He really had no weakness in college and his ceiling is as a future HOFer in the XFL so it's all a matter of how much he wants it and his work ethic as he begins his professional career.

Grade A+

2049 1.19
Texas
LG John Holt 27/75
Vol 98
6' 3" 301 lbs
Southern California

Holt won a National Championship in his senior year in college opening holes for the #1 overall pick RB Jarrod Ross but he wasn't considered a 1st round pick entering the draft as you was projected to go somewhere in the late 2nd, 3rd or even 4th round. Texas drafted LT Sammie Pittman with the 12th overall pick ahead of Dellinger who went ahead of this pick as Texas is clearly focused on building their offensive line in this draft. Texas has missed the postseason in 6 straight seasons and they are looking to build the team from the inside out.

Grade B-

2049 1.20
Gem City
WR Richard Jackson 39/78
Vol 74
5' 11" 199 lbs
Penn State

Gem City is one of the most stable francises in the XFL, having made the postseason in 11 of the last 12 seasons and 20 of the last 27 seasons. They have accomplished that stability through steady ownership as Raidergreg enters his 29th season as owner and solid drafting in the first & second rounds. WR Jackson fits the bill of a solid Gem City pick as he has solid speed, pass catching skills and the added ability to run the ball.

Grade A

2049 1.21
Los Angeles
RG Larry Smith 47/86
Vol 98
6' 1" 317 lbs
Rutgers

The build-up to the 2049 has hundreds of mock drafts along with draft grades for hundreds of players. Two things were made abundantly clear during all of this, there was no 1st round QB in this draft class & only 1, maybe 2 OL were going in the 1st round. With the 21st pick of the 1st round, Los Angeles takes the 4th OL of the draft which proves a point....what the he'll do the so called experts know! RG Smith does have the size, strength and potential to become a starter in the XFL but while he is an accomplished run blocker, it's his pass blocking skills in a passing league which raised all the questions in the first place. Smith joins CB Miller as 1st rounders this year for LA who has gone 23-17 in the first 8 games of the season but 14-26 in the last 8 games of the season the past 5 years.

Grade A-

2049 1.22
Pittsburgh
SLB Thomas Murphy 33/76
Vol 36
6' 1" 242 lbs
Texas A&M

Pittsburgh hasn't had a losing season the past 8 years but missed the postseason 3 times in that span including last season despite going 10-6. They had the 7th ranked defense last season and selected LB Murphy with the 22nd overall pick. Murphy is your prototypical football player who does everything great despite having less than great physical abilities. It's not so much his strength which is elite or his intelligence which is solid, it's his natural speed & quickness which ranks lower then most for his position. What he lacks for in speed & quickness, he makes up for in actual football skill.

Grade A-

2049 1.23
Kansas City
WR Kip Urbina 33/76
Vol 96
6' 0" 210 lbs
Southern California

The 3rd player from the National Championship Trojans team goes in the 1st round as WR Urbina is selected by Kansas City. The francise has been to the postseason 4 straight seasons under McBolt's ownership but in the off-season, Daytona owner Voryzover and Kansas City owner McBolt essentially traded francises. All the details of the francise swap are still a bit murky but with Voryzover taking ownership of a successful francise and McBolt taking ownership of a perennial losing francise, it kinda feels like a real life version of the movie "Trading Places". It will be interesting to see the paths of these 2 teams over the course of the next few seasons to see how it all plays out! KC's selection of Urbina feels like a solid pickup as he is a high quality receiver with average speed.

Grade B

2049 1.24
Toronto
MLB Alexander Roby 37/71
Vol 52
6' 1" 231 lbs
Mississippi State

Toronto is coming off a 12-4 season which matches their best record in francise history which has been reached 3 separate times. They entered week 16 last season with a shot at not only the North division Title but also the #1 Seed in the AXC but they lost to Cincinnati and fell to the #5 Seed as a Wildcard. They had the #10 offense & #12 defense last season and will look to improve again this season with the addition of LB Roby who has elite speed & quickness for the position. Roby was a tackling machine in college and that should translate to the XFL.

Grade A

2049 1.25
Orlando
TE Gary Vanzant 36/83
Vol 82
6' 3" 261 lbs
Loras

Orlando broke through last season to win the South Division to break a 3 year hiatus from the postseason. Despite a subpar 9-7 record, they boasted the #12 offense & #13 defense last season and should continue to improve. They take TE Vanzant with the 25th pick, a possible elite level talent according to draft experts. This is one player to watch in training camp as his potential is high but concerns over his overall skill set transitioning from a small college program to the XFL had some teams scared of a potential bust.

Grade A

2049 1.26
Washington
DT Michael Ley 50/86
Vol 76
6' 3" 299 lbs
Southern California

The 4th player from the National Championship Trojans goes #26 to Washington in DT Ley. Another potential elite level DT drafted in the first round. Some scouts believe he may best be moved to DE based on his size and losing some weight should improve his already solid speed for the position. The addition of a new pass rusher to.pair with ALLPRO DE Rolf Brown should pay dividends.

Grade A

2049 1.27
New York
RDE Christopher Keller 42/81
Vol 70
6' 5" 274 lbs
Northwestern

New York won their first division Title in 29 years last season over perennial Buffalo. They had the #5 offense in the league but had only the #18 defense & were #19 in sacks. To combat Buffalo insane passing offense, they drafted DE Keller to become their #1 pass rusher. Reports out of New York have the team already implementing a strict diet and nutrition program aimed.to getting Keller leaner and faster off the edge. Considering the fact he was graded as having elite speed for his size & position, a leaner faster Keller is terrifying.

Grade A

I'm sorry the rest of this is taking a long time but I'm dealing with "real life" issues and I'm chipping away at it when I get a chance. The rest should be done soon.

Thanks

2049 1.28
Providence
WR Richard Hoffman 37/79
Vol 90
6' 0" 205 lbs
Northern Iowa

Providence has gone 14-2 the past 3 seasons but fallen short to Atlanta along with 30 other teams. They are one of a handful of teams just behind the dominators and looking to finally get over the hump. The selection of WR Hoffman is a solid pick with good upside as the Islanders continue to look to close the gap.

Grade A

2049 1.29
Phoenix
C Matthew Dabbs 31/87
Vol 20
6' 4" 284 lbs
Louisiana State

Phoenix selects this year's Remington Award winner for best Center in college football. He is the consensus #1 center in the draft and expected to go somewhere near the end of the 1st round. Solid pick for a Phoenix francise that is right on the heels of Atlanta.

Grade A+

2049 1.30
Cincinnati
CB Charles Verdugo 31/83
Vol 84
6' 0" 192 lbs
Arizona

Cincinnati has been AXC Conference Champion & the #1 Seed in the AXC the past 2 seasons but has fallen a step or two short in pursuit of their first XFL Tile in francise history. They select a DB with the 30th pick who scouts see as a potential starter in the XFL. There were some concerns about his attitude & work ethic which need to be answered in training camp but if he puts those concerns to bed, he can be a solid pro.

Grade A

2049 1.31
Brooklyn
C Alexander Gonzalez 25/81
Vol 16
6' 3" 280 lbs
Arizona State

Brooklyn may have hoped C Dabbs fell to them at pick 31 but when he went to Phoenix at pick 29, they made the next best selection at Center in Gonzalez. He may not have the potential of Dabbs but he still has a chance to be a starter in this league. Brooklyn came to life in the 2nd half of the season when the team was sold to new ownership and many believe the new owner can quickly turn this francise into a winner. Time will tell.

Grade A-

2049 1.32
Zehlendorf
TE Peter Woods 31/70
Vol 4
6' 1" 237 lbs
Missouri

The 1st round concludes with the selection of TE Woods by the Zecken. Some mock drafts had him going in the top 15-20 in the 1st round based on his elite speed at the position so imagine Zehlendorf's surprise when he lands in there lap at pick 32. Will all 31 teams live to regret this pick? We will find out soon enough but it's a great pick.

Grade A+

The 1st round review is finally complete and I'm officially on vacation from work until January 15 so I can handle my family issues!!!!!

That's alot of stress off my back!!!

Thanks
