Salary Cap Question

Say a guy has a base salary of 1.25 mil and a bonus of 1 mil. If you cut him you only gain access to $250k in salary to use that year. Correct?

No....base salary and bonus are seperate. You can always hit the cut player bottom and it will explain the cap ramifications then "X" out of the cut.

Base salary is owed year by year but you have to always pay the bonus.

Lets say you have a player signed to a 4 year deal at 1.5 base each year and 2 million bonus each year. If you cut that player, you will free up 1.5 million in cap space but also be charged 6 million in dead cap the following year (2 million ×3).

Be careful about that dead cap hit. You are responsible for the entire bonus no matter if you cut the player, trade him or he retires. 3 or 4 players due hugh bonuses that either get cut , traded or retire can really mess up your cap situation the following season.

If you arent careful, you can build thay dead cap into the 50 million, 75 million and my own personal record was 108 million on a team I completely tore down and traded away all my talent for draft picks. The total cap the following year was 132 million so I had 24 million to field a team and had to trade all my draft picks for future picks.

On the team page you can also change the drop-down to Player contracts and it will tell you how much cap space will be saved for each player, since during the season the base salary is pro-rated. The further into the season you go, the less of it you get back.
