The Rookie Roundup for the Seattle Barbariansby Mahed Spaulding and M. Beck CertainThis years draft centered on upgrading the Wide Receiver position. Hoping to grab that elite player in the draft, they took chances drafting 3 receivers in the first 3 rounds. While it remains to be seen if any of these guys make elite status, this years draft was solid, if the goal was to improve the receiving corps.
1st rounder Peter Tomlin did not have a great camp. Tomlin was expected to jump right into the starting role as the #1 receiver. He did show some skill advancement going +12 this season in his Summary Score, but coaches backed off his future potential a full 10 points. While there is no doubt he will make the team due to his speed and decent hands, it will be up to his preseason performance to decide where he lands in the depth chart.
2nd round pick Stephen White out of Washington will likely be fighting for that #1 spot in the depth chart. He tore up defenders in camp, boosting his Summary Score 16 points, and dragging his potential up 5 points with it. The buzz around this guy is great with the coaches, scouts and owners.
Seattle then used an early 3rd round pick from an earlier trade to upgrade their offensive line, grabbing some depth for the Offensive line. Alberto Underwood had a decent camp at RT with a Summary Score of +6 with +3 potential, but coaches are considering making him ready to play almost any position on the line, giving them an excellent back up at G, C and RT.
Olen Rodriguez WR out of Bringham Young could have had a better camp as well. He did jump 7 points for the season, but his overall dropped 3 points. This guy's career in Seattle is make or break during preseason, even with his speed. They may make the move to RB due to his size, but the RB position is overflowing, which could make his job even harder.
With the 4th round pick, Seattle made a pick that surprised some of the media, and picked James Ramsey RB out of Washington. As stated above, the stable is full at RB but Ramsey did have a decent camp going +11/+4. Maybe the coaching staff has a plan for him, going against the grain a bit with a RB not focused on hands.
The rest of the picks were cut, with only one so far being picked up by another team.
During a sit down with Seattle GM TimReeseJr, he said "...something fell off the last 2 years. We went from NXC champions to 2 seasons later not making the playoffs. We went all the way back to the Championship game against Oakland each off season. The trade for Price fell into our lap. Our 2023 draft ended pretty much in disaster and we only have 2 guys left from that draft. This draft we decided we needed a deep threat. After camp, we now have 3 potentially. I really hope I am forced into some tough decisions when it's time to get down to 53. We already let some really good veterans of this team go, mainly to free up salary, and there could be a few more before week 1 begins."
