We go live to Providence, where after last season's wholesale sacking of the scouts, there is actually some good news to report on this season.
Making the biggest splash out of camp is fifth-round selection RT-Daniel Robertson out of Missouri, who gained 9 points overall. He'll be assigned to the interior of the O-Line since he still has A LOT of work to fulfill his projected 98 pass blocking, but it looks like a late round keeper lineman for the Islanders.
Further good news on the O-line came with the report that second-round pick-up LG-Jerry Luce out of Notre Dame gained 7 points overall. The word on Luce is pretty much the opposite of Robinson as his pass blocking skill shot into the 90s and his run block still leaves room to be desired. It might be that he and Robertson just swap positional assignments in the preseason.
Eastern Kentucky's Aldo Floyd might sound like a bad 80s rock band mash-up, but as a center, he's looking pretty nice after gaining 4 points at training camp. Altogether, this draft could go down as one that cements the next generation of the offensive line in Providence.
But it wasn't just the O-line hogging the training camp buzz. First-round DT selection Leroy Morelli out of Oregon came in better than expected and picked up 2 points overall from his draft rating. Coaches say he retains plenty of potential to continue growing into as he ages and gathers experience. Clemson decathlete Perry Carter, a seventh-round grab at CB, also gained 2 points, but still appears an unlikely fit for the roster...if only there was some kick catching skill there to have a shot at making the roster as a return man...I'd love to see what 91 speed and 95 strength could do.
Sliding from expectation at camp was third-round TE pickup TImothy Hope out of BYU. Hope was on a mission (#ldshumor) to make a splash, but that future is now a little murkier. Considering that Hope was reportedly on the Islanders' radar in Round 2, the team has to feel happy waiting to make its move until Round 3.
Last we come to sixth-round QB selection George Smith out of Indiana State. The FCS signal caller with a freakish arm strength and high pass accuracy potential dropped 2 points overall. Worse, his field of vision sank to a max of 25 and a field of vision to 48. The Islanders were hoping for a steal of a deal here, but I'm not certain they got it.
Overall though, the mood out of Providence is incredibly festive as training camp breaks and Islander fans look forward to seeing if last season was a fluke, or if this year's crew can continue to carry forward the momentum of last year's magical season.
