The Gem City Gangsters opened their 2062 preseason with a 13-6 road win over the Toronto Titans on August 12. Under head coach Kermit Thomas, the Gangsters relied on a balanced offensive effort and a stout defense to claim the victory at Toronto.
The Gangsters struck first late in the opening quarter. Quarterback Anthony Hicklin connected on a 57-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Santa Claus, overcoming a potential penalty on the play. David White added the extra point, putting Gem City up 7-0 with 17 seconds left in the first quarter.
Toronto was limited offensively throughout the game, unable to find the end zone. The Titans managed only two field goals from kicker Dave Randall, from 26 and 60 yards out, but missed a 60-yard attempt as well. The Gangsters supplemented their touchdown with a 37-yard field goal from White in the second quarter to extend their lead to 10-0.
The Titans responded with a field goal of their own late in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 10-3. Toronto’s offense struggled to sustain drives, finishing with no red zone visits and failing to convert on third downs.
Defensively, Gem City forced multiple turnovers and kept Toronto's yardage limited. The Gangsters' defense recorded two interceptions and one forced fumble. Notably, defensive tackle Bernardo Lafontaine forced a fumble that helped set the defensive tone. The Titan defense responded with three fumble recoveries and two sacks but could not capitalize on their turnovers.
The Gangsters’ ground game was productive, rushing 40 times for 153 yards and a touchdown, including a score by Santa Claus. Hicklin finished with 105 passing yards, a touchdown, and one interception, while backup Neil Anderson contributed 76 passing yards and 7 rushing yards but threw an interception as well.
Toronto’s quarterback Howard Hine completed 12 of 22 passes for 75 yards and one interception. The Titans primarily relied on short gains, with 83 rushing yards on 25 attempts. Both teams struggled to convert in crucial situations, with no third-down conversions recorded.
Special teams played a role in field position, with multiple punts resulting in fair catches. The Gangsters’ Donald Barnes punted effectively, pinning the Titans deep on several occasions.
The final quarter saw the Gangsters maintain their lead through solid defensive plays. An interception by John Cho halted a promising Toronto drive, sealing the victory for Gem City. With an emphasis on ball control and defensive pressure, the Gangsters kept Toronto off the scoreboard in the second half.
This victory provides a positive start for Kermit Thomas as the preseason begins, showcasing a defense capable of disrupting the opposition and an offense with big-play potential despite some turnovers. The Gem City Gangsters will look to build on this performance as the preseason continues.
