KETTERING, Ohio – The Gem City Gangsters held on for a narrow 24-21 victory over the Providence Islanders Sunday at home, improving their record to 11-2 while extending a winning streak to four games.

Providence struck first in the second quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tommie Vaughan to Timothy Menendez, followed by a successful extra point by Calvin Carper. The Islanders added another touchdown on a 5-yard run by James Berry, but missed the chance to take greater control as their special teams yielded favorable field position to the Gangsters.

Gem City kicker David White contributed three field goals from 47, 27, and 36 yards. Running back Larry Padgett led the Gangsters’ ground game with 102 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown, while quarterback Neil Anderson completed 17 of 26 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Adam Sandler also recorded 96 receiving yards, helping move the chains effectively.

Defensively, the Gangsters pressured the Islanders with three sacks and forced a timely fumble recovery by Manuel Rosen late in the third quarter. Linebacker Nathan Forcer intercepted Vaughan once and disrupted several attempts to extend Providence's drives.

Providence’s Vaughan finished with 193 passing yards, two touchdown passes, but also three interceptions, including two returned by Forcer. His contributions on the ground included 14 rushing yards, but turnovers hampered the Islanders’ ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

The game remained tightly contested throughout, with the Islanders maintaining a slight lead into halftime. However, the Gangsters’ special teams unit repeatedly flipped the field position, aided by punter Rodney Wright’s effective 50-yard boots and consistently secure fair catches by returner Damien Jones for Providence and Bennie Blizzard for Gem City.

Gangsters Head Coach Kermit Thomas emphasized ball control and capitalizing on field position, which proved decisive. The win keeps the Gangsters atop the division standings at 11-2, with a 4-1 division record, maintaining momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch. Meanwhile, Providence falls to 7-6, continuing a three-game losing streak.

Penalties impacted both teams minimally, with Gem City penalized three times for 20 yards, and Providence twice for 21 yards. Neither team converted on third downs in this notable defensive battle.
