POWER RANKINGS (WEEK 5)
I had some extra time so I decided to do a power rankings. This won't be a weekly thing but when I have the time, I will do my custom power rankings. ***THE FORMULA???*** I've come up with my own system that I've been using for years and it has proved to be very accurate for ranking the 32 teams. First: I add each team's Total Offense & Total Defense ranking (Team Stats/Yards from scrimmage) and subtract that total from a base 66. So the highest possible score is 64 if a team has the #1 Total Offense & #1 Total Defense with the lowest possible score being 2 if a team ranks 32nd in both. Second: I add/subtract each team's Turnover Margin (Team Stats/Turnover Margin) from the value calculated from above. So they is no limit to the highest/lowest possible score but the range over 29 seasons of the XFL has been from +28 (Buffalo/2025) to -39 (Daytona/2023). Third: I give each team 5 points for each win & subtract 5 points for each lose with a tie equalling zero points. This score can range from 80 points (16-0) to -80 points (0-16) but for this particular ranking through 5 games, the range is 25 points (5-0) to -25 points (0-5). This value is added/subtracted from the total calculated in step 2. This gives each team a ranking score and it's simply a matter of putting them in descending order. Fourth: I can stop after step 3 and get a fairly accurate power ranking but if I want to add strength of schedule to the equation then I have to calculate the total records for each team's opponents and come up with a winning percentage of opponents. I then multiple each team's ranking score after step 3 by their opponents winning percentage to get an adjusted ranking score. BASE POWER RANKINGS No surprise here as Atlanta leads the way with Phoenix, Buffalo & Dakota all in the top 5 which accounts for the 4 undefeated teams. Memphis as usual is a top team despite their 1 lose. Team's ranked 6th through 12 all have 4 wins except Cincinnati & Houston with 3 wins but play in the toughest division in the XFL. Team's ranked 28th-32nd are all winless except Carolina who has 1 win. 1. Atlanta 91 2. Phoenix 84 3. Buffalo 80 4. Memphis 78 5. Dakota 75 6. Providence 74 7. New York 65 8. Gem City 62 9. Cincinnati 57 10. Houston 54 11. Los Angeles 53 12. Vancouver 49 13. Washington 41 14. Toronto 39 14. Pittsburgh 39 16. Philadelphia 38 17. Brooklyn 37 18. Indiana 32 19. Saint Paul 24 20. Kansas City 23 21. Daytona 16 22. Montana 11 22. Tampa Bay 11 24. Orlando 6 25. Seattle 0 26. Oakland -5 26. Miami -5 28. Texas -9 29. Carolina -12 30. New England -14 31. Vegas -19 32. Zehlendorf -22 OPPONENTS RECORDS Vegas has had the toughest schedule while Philadelphia has the toughest schedule among teams with a winning record. Buffalo & Dakota are both undefeated and they have the 31st & 32nd toughest schedule led by Dakota whose 5 opponents have combined for 3 wins!!!! It raises the question, is Dakota really any good or just taking advantage of the easiest schedule in the XFL!! 1. Vegas 19-6 (.760) 2. Orlando 18-7 (.720) 2. New England 18-7 (.720) 4. Texas 17-7-1 (.680) 5. Philadelphia 16-9 (.640) 5. Tampa Bay 16-9 (.640) 5. Miami 16-9 (.640) 8. Montana 15-10 (.600) 8. Seattle 15-10 (.600) 8. Oakland 15-8-2 (.600) 8. Carolina 15-10 (.600) 8. Cincinnati 15-10 (.600) 13. Kansas City 14-10-1 (.560) 14. Houston 13-11-1 (.520) 14. Toronto 13-11-1 (.520) 16. Phoenix 12-12-1 (.480) 16. New York 12-13 (.480) 18. Gem City 11-14 (.440) 18. Memphis 11-14 (.440) 18. Zehlendorf 11-14 (.440) 21. Providence 10-15 (.400) 21. Washington 10-15 (.400) 21. Pittsburgh 10-15 (.400) 21. Brooklyn 10-15 (.400) 21. Saint Paul 10-15 (.400) 26. Indiana 9-15-1 (.360) 26. Atlanta 9-16 (.360) 26. Daytona 9-16 (.360) 29. Los Angeles 8-17 (.320) 29. Vancouver 8-15-2 (.320) 31. Buffalo 7-18 (.280) 32. Dakota 3-22 (.120) ADJUSTED POWER RANKINGS The adjusted power rankings have Phoenix claiming the top spot followed by Memphis, Cincinnati then Atlanta who was the base power ranking #1. The big story is undefeated Dakota falling from #5 down to #20 in the adjusted power rankings due to the easiest schedule in the history of the XFL through 5 games. Even Buffalo who is undefeated fell from #3 to #10 bases on their 31st ranked schedule. Philadelphia moved up the most (+7) based on their toughest schedule followed by Cincinnati (+6) who have the 8th toughest schedule. 1. Phoenix 40.32 (+1) 2. Memphis 34.32 (+2) 3. Cincinnati 34.20 (+6) 4. Atlanta 32.76 (-3) 5. New York 31.20 (+2) 6. Providence 29.60 (0) 7. Houston 28.08 (+3) 8. Gem City 27.28 (0) 9. Philadelphia 24.32 (+7) 10. Buffalo 22.40 (-7) 11. Toronto 20.28 (+3) 12. Los Angeles 16.96 (-1) 13. Washington 16.40 (0) 14. Vancouver 15.68 (-2) 15. Pittsburgh 15.60 (-1) 16. Brooklyn 14.80 (+1) 17. Kansas City 12.88 (+3) 18. Indiana 11.52 (0) 19. Saint Paul 9.60 (0) 20. Dakota 9.00 (-15) 21. Tampa Bay 7.04 (+1) 22. Montana 6.60 (0) 23. Daytona 5.76 (-2) 24. Orlando 4.32 (0) 25. Seattle 0 (0) 26. Oakland -3.00 (0) 27. Miami -3.20 (-1) 28. Texas -6.12 (0) 29. Carolina -7.20 (0) 30. Zehlendorf -9.68 (+2) 31. New England -10.08 (-1) 32. Vegas -14.44 (-1) What does all of this mean??? It's a whole lot of nothing really but it does raise questions & concerns about certain teams while certainly validating others. |
