I'm kicking myself for not taking Alvarez in the 1st round. Stuck with old man Lock for another year.
Dakota Blizzard QB History
Randal Cunningham 2018-2032
3x XFL Champion
7x AXC Conference Champion
8x XFL MVP
8x ALLPRO
Hall of Fame (2033)
77,943 yards passing (1st Alltime)
701 TD passes (1st Alltime)
POSTSEASON
10,593 yards passing (1st Alltime)
64 TD passes (1st Alltime)
Randal Cunningham is the best quarterback in the history of the XFL without debate. He is the Alltime leader in both passing yards and TD passes in both the regular season and postseason. Beyond that, his 77,943 passing yards is 23,346 yards more then the 2nd best total, Matthew Peasley's 54,597. Peasley is retired so the closest active QB on the list are Bobby Moreira (49,908) and Kenneth Powers (42,562). Moreira is in his 14th season with Brooklyn while Powers is in his 10th season for perennial contender Saint Paul. Powers threw for 5,001 yards in 2037 so if he can match that total for 7 more seasons, he would still need 385 more yards to pass Cunningham.
Randal Cunningham's 701 TD passes is 330 more than the next best total, Hall of Famer Juan Kirk (371). Again Bobby Moreira is the closet active QB with 351 with much maligned veteran QB Drew Lock next with 341. Kenneth Powers has 329 and threw 43 TD passes in 2037 so he would need 8 more seasons reaching 43 TD passes to reach 673 which is 28 TD passes short.
Cunningham's postseason numbers may be reachable, his 10,593 passing yards is 4,941 yards than the next best total. Bobby Moreira has 5,652 while Kenneth Powers has 5,078 postseason passing yards. Powers has thrown for over 900 passing yards in each of the past 3 postseasons so he needs 6 more postseason runs where he averages 900 passing yards to reach 10,478 passing yards.
The most obtainable of the 4 records is postseason TD passes where Cunningham has 64 with Kenneth Powers 2nd Alltime with 42 TD passes. Powers has averaged just over 8 TD passes over the past 4 postseasons so he is just 3 postseason runs away from breaking that record. The dark horse is Drew Lock who needs 26 TD passes in the postseason to match Cunningham but he is rumored to be on the trading block.
Jason Matson2030-2038
1x XFL Champion
3x AXC Champion
3x XFL MVP
4x ALLPRO
28,115 passing yards (32nd Alltime)
258 TD passes (10th Alltime)
POSTSEASON
3,858 passing yards (7th Alltime)
35 TD passes (4th Alltime)
Jason Matson was drafted by Miami in the 3rd round of the 2026 draft. He made just 12 starts in 4 seasons with Miami before hitting free agency in 2030 where he signed a 6 year/34.4 million dollar contract to become Randal Cunningham's protégé and backup. He was used as a kick holder for 3 seasons before taking over the starting job in 2033 after Randal Cunningham retired. Matson had success in his 5 seasons as starter but he struggled under the shadow of Randal Cunningham. Despite being selected MVP 3 times and being an ALLPRO 4 times, he was benched in 2037 in favor of Ronald Eastman. Eastman was the former Tampa Bay Fireballs starter with a Cannon for an arm and Dakota made him the starter because it was believed Matson couldn't win the big one. Halfway through the season, Eastman was struggling with 8 TD passes and 8 Interceptions and Matson was giving back the starter job. Matson would go 7-2 down the stretch and shut up his distractors by winning 4 postseason games and his 1st XFL Title. Despite his redemption, Dakota would draft a quarterback with not only its 1st round pick but also its 2nd round pick. Rumors abound that Matson is on the trade block and all reports indicate that rookie QB Robert Alvarez is the starting QB for the Dakota Blizzard.
Robert Alvarez2038-
Alvarez was drafted in the 1st round of the 2038 draft and it seemed apparent he was gonna be the QB to replace Jason Matson when the XFL Champion QB retired or moved on from Dakota. Matson has 3 years remaining on his contract and at 34, it was assumed he would play out that contract then retire. Despite the fact that Matson lost his starting job before returning in the 2nd half of the 2037 season to win a Title, it's seems Dakota still isn't satisfied that Matson is the answer at QB. Alvarez turned heads in training camp where Dakota had 4 QBs in camp, Matson, Ronald Eastman, rookies Alvarez and Gary Fielding. Rumors started leaking that Dakota was shopping both veterans and would listen about the rookie Fielding. Those Rumors intensified after the 1st preseason game, when despite dressing 4 QBs for the game, Alvarez took all the snaps. Robert Alvarez acquitted himself well in that game going 24/32 (75%) for 245 yards with 2 TD passes and no interceptions.
Doea the fact that Alvarez took all the snaps mean Alvarez has already been handed the starting job? Veteran QBs sitting in the preseason isn't unusual but rookie Gary Fielding didn't even get into the game. Insiders believe Alvarez has already separated himself from not only Fielding but both both veterans and the coaching staff wants Alvarez to get every snap possible in the preseason so he can hit the ground running during the regular season.
If Jason Matson is out as the starter for Dakota, he can hang his head high. He had the unenviable task of replacing a legend and accounted himself with class and dignity while all the while being recognized as an MVP, ALLPRO and finally an XFL Champion!
Robert Alvarez was 2 years old when Dakota drafted Randal Cunningham and 16 years old when He retired. He has the benefit of separation which Jason Matson never had. It looks like Alvarez will be handed the keys to the francise and he will have to live up to the legacy of not only Randal Cunningham but he will also be measured against Jason Matson. A combined 4 XFL TItles, 10 AXC Conference Championships, 11 MVPs, 12 ALLPROs plus 1 Hall of Famer means he not only has 1 giant pair of shoes to fill but also a 2nd pair, not as big, but still large enough to matter.
